Former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and his wife, Sue, have listed their Ann Arbor condo for $2.35 million.
The couple had purchased the place in 2014 for $1,425,000. He snagged the two-floor abode while serving as the state’s governor, a position he held from 2011 through 2018.
The empty nesters had decamped from a gated community in the suburbs outside Ann Arbor and wanted to enjoy the city. The unit they purchased is located in the heart of downtown.
The condo occupies the top two floors of the three-floor building. The couple tapped architect Tamara Burns, who brought a historic preservationist background, to make some changes that fit with the era of the building.
Built in the late 1860s or early 1870s, the storied building was apparently first inhabited by a man named Florian Muehlig, an undertaker and furniture maker.
The $500,000 addition to Snyder’s condo included construction of a 514-square-foot rooftop structure and roof deck overlooking Main Street. They also enclosed rear-facing balconies for an additional 700 square feet of space.
The former governor has a soft spot for the area. He attended the University of Michigan in the 1970s, earning three degrees at the institution.
But after six years, and a pandemic, the former governor and first lady have placed the updated space on the market. The two-floor, 4,644-square-foot condo has two bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.
Updates include a large, bright main floor. An open kitchen features stone counters, stainless-steel appliances, and a large island. The kitchen opens to the living space, which flows out to the deck, which is large enough for a large sectional sofa and dining table.
Highlights of the interior spaces include beamed ceilings, wood floors, and exposed painted brick. There’s also a family room and office. The condo comes with two garage parking spaces.
Snyder, a Republican, recently endorsed Joe Biden, a Democrat, for president. During his leadership, Snyder took heat for his mishandling of the Flint water crisis.
